How Friendship, Family and Community Shaped One Cast Member’s 55-Year Disney Journey

Over 55 years at Disneyland Resort, Dave Brizic has witnessed iconic Disney history firsthand: he saw Walt Disney in person, watched storied attractions being built, and even met his wife on property. Ask David what has mattered the most throughout his career and his answer is simple: the people who shaped his journey and the history he had the opportunity to witness.

David celebrates alongside his family, friends and fellow honorees during the 50-, 55- and 60-year service celebration.

The Early Years Where the Memories Began

David first joined the Security team at Disneyland Resort in the summer of 1965 and quickly found himself experiencing moments that would go on to become part of Disneyland Resort storied history.

While working near Sleeping Beauty Castle one morning, David witnessed a magical scene unfold as Walt Disney, and more than two dozen beloved Disney characters gathered to film something special for guests. Witnessing Walt’s attention to detail left a lasting impression “He really was a perfectionist about everything,” David laughed. “He was impressive as far as his intensity and his interest in keeping things perfect for others.”

A year later, David witnessed another piece of Disney history as Walt Disney dedicated “it’s a small world” on opening day in 1966. Those moments left a lasting impression, not only because he saw Walt’s vision come to life firsthand, but because he recognized the care, attention and people-first philosophy behind it.

More Than Coworkers

Although David experienced once in a lifetime moments, more than five decades later, he reminisced about what encouraged him to continue working at the resort after all these years and it’s something much closer to home.

“It was the people.” David smiled.

Working alongside fellow Security cast members, he formed lifelong friendships. Over the years, he and a group of 12 close friends became inseparable, creating a sense of community that made Disneyland feel like a second home.

Those relationships reflect what David values most about Disneyland Resort: a culture built around people.

And those lasting connections weren’t limited to his fellow Security cast members. In fact, one of those connections would change his life forever. After meeting fellow cast member Lani during his early years at Disneyland, a casual conversation between shifts soon grew into something more, and the two would later marry in 1968.

By the time Lani and David married, Disneyland had already become much more than the place David came to work. It was where he had built a life.

Growing Together Through the Years

After spending time away from Disneyland while serving in the U.S. Army, David returned as a Security cast member in December 1970 and watched the resort evolve around him, giving him new responsibilities, experiences and stories to tell.

Today, David’s advice to cast members just beginning their Disney careers reflects the same values that guided him throughout his own journey.

“Really understand what you’re doing, do a good job, and be friendly with everyone,” he shared succinctly.

The People Behind the Memories

More than 55 years after his first shift, David’s story is about more than the history he witnessed. It’s about the long-lasting friendships he built, the family he found and the community that shaped his life. While Disneyland Resort has transformed over the decades, the relationships formed remain in his heart forever.

Surrounded by family and friends, David smiles as he is recognized for an incredible 55 years of service.
